CLASS 1 - Course 1: Machine Learning in Business and Industry

When hearing the term “machine learning”, many people think immediately of complex, artificially intelligent prediction systems.  While these certainly exist, machine learning can also be used for data analysis – that is, looking at data and understanding the world that generated it.  This course will discuss, at a high level, how machine learning is used for both making predictions as well as analysis and inference.  Focusing on supervised learning, we will present the different kinds of models and prediction problems and how machine learning can be applied both to create systems as well as to gain business insights.

  – Module 1: Why build a Model? Prediction vs Analysis

  – Module 2: Classification vs Regression

  – Module 3: Going further: Calibration and Uncertainty Quantification

  – Module 4: Metrics for Regression and Classification

  – Module 5: Beyond Metrics: “Real-world” Model Evaluation
